Answers to the most common printer problems our Charlotte customers ask about.
A printer appears "offline" when your computer can't communicate with it — even if the printer is powered on and has paper. The most common causes are: (1) the printer lost its Wi-Fi connection after a router reboot or network change, (2) a stale print job is blocking the queue, (3) the printer spooler service crashed on your PC, or (4) a driver conflict after a Windows update. The fix depends on which of these applies to your specific setup. If restarting both the printer and router doesn't resolve it within a few minutes, call us — we'll diagnose and fix it on the spot.
Epson printers commonly stop printing due to: clogged print heads (very common with inkjet models that sit unused for weeks), an empty or mis-seated cartridge, a stuck print job in the queue, or a driver that broke after a Windows update. Epson's built-in head cleaning utility helps in mild cases, but if the nozzle check shows blocked colors or the issue persists, a professional cleaning is needed. We service all Epson models — EcoTank, WorkForce, and Expression series.
There are three easy ways to print the IP address from the printer itself: (1) On most printers, press and hold the Wi-Fi or Info button for a few seconds to print a network configuration page — the IP address is listed there. (2) On printers with a small display, go to Settings → Network → Wireless LAN Setup or TCP/IP settings. (3) On HP printers, print a "Wireless Network Test Report" from the Wireless menu. If you're setting up network printing and need the IP for a print server or static assignment, we can handle the full configuration for you.
Wireless printers drop off the network for several reasons: the printer's IP address changes every time it reconnects (DHCP), your router's 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands have the same name confusing the printer, the printer goes into deep sleep and can't wake up on the network, or the router's firewall blocks the printer. The permanent fix is usually assigning a static IP to the printer in your router's settings and sometimes updating the printer firmware. We do this as part of our standard wireless printer setup.
Yes — sharing a printer across multiple computers is one of our most common small business requests. We connect the printer to your office network (wired or wireless), install the correct drivers on every PC and Mac in your office, configure scan-to-email if you have a multifunction device, and test printing from each workstation. We also set up printing from phones and tablets if needed.
Both. For software and connectivity issues — offline errors, driver problems, Wi-Fi setup, print queue issues — we fix everything on-site. For hardware problems like damaged rollers, worn paper feed mechanisms, or broken parts, we evaluate whether the repair cost makes sense vs. replacing the printer. We'll give you an honest recommendation, not push unnecessary repairs.
